5 Ways to Turn Resolutions Into Goals Which Inspire You

By Jean L. Serio

There comes a time, for most, when setting new goals seems necessary. Whether it's the beginning of a new calendar, religious, business year which stimulates us. Or for personal reasons you feel it's time to wipe the slate clean and begin anew. Regardless your reason, instead of starting from scratch, with all-new ideas and plans, if you start with updating previous goals, you may be re-inspired to achieve what you originally resolved to do.
"I learned this, at least, by my experiment: that if one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he had imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours." --Henry David Thoreau - Walden, or Life in the Woods
We all have long-held dreams and goals. Those we'll likely never let go regardless what life brings. Instead of wiping the slate clean, if some goals are still worthy of achievement, why not rethink and update them. Refine, tweak and streamline them. To meet new needs, changes, desires and goals.
Here's 5 Simple Tips to Help You Reach Your Goals:
1. Discuss your new goals with someone you trust. It always helps to share your thoughts and goals with those who care and share your interests. It can also open up a discussion which prompts suggestions which may help refine your goals.
Plus it serves to encourage you; confirming you're not alone in your pursuits. Someone's on the sidelines rooting for you who wants you to succeed. Not only that, sharing provides another dividend. Once you've shared, you've claimed those goals. This helps further motivate you; propel you toward your goals.
2. Write down your goals or resolutions. Mark Victor Hansen says, "By recording your dreams and goals on paper, you set in motion the process of becoming the person you most want to be. Put your future in good hands - your own."
3. Resolve to discover and try at least one new method of reaching your goals. Whether it's trying a new marketing method, self-help, business group or health club you join, a new class you take or experience you gain working with someone new or a non-profit, commit and stick to it. Reach out and beyond your comfort zone and you'll not only enlarge your sphere of relationships, this new openness can aid in reaching your goals. Bring you a new job, clients, unexpected but welcome business ventures.
4. Have a simple plan and set reachable goals. As the saying goes, "Rome wasn't built in a day". Keep that in mind and divide your goals into manageable chunks. Each goal, or portion of a goal, reached will help keep you optimistic and challenged to continue moving forward.
5. Celebrate each goal reached regardless how small. Whether it's an espresso at Starbucks with a co-worker or a simple meal with friends, sharing your success with others invites encouragement. Helps spur you on to greater achievements.
Think of your goals and resolutions as inspirations which lead you to the fulfillment of your dreams. Not changes which must be made but challenges which help you grow and succeed.
Mark Twain said: "Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover."
